Zorinia Design recently completed a Modern Minimalist apartment project in Copenhagen, focusing on architectural clarity and refined simplicity. The client's brief for their apartment at Krøyers Plads was specific: to create a living space where architecture was not merely a backdrop but an active, integral element of the interior design. This vision guided every decision, from the initial space planning to the final selection of materials and furnishings. The aim was to achieve a calm, structured, and distinctly contemporary environment that felt both expansive and intimately personal. Our approach emphasized clean lines, geometric precision, and a muted color palette to allow the inherent beauty of the structure and the quality of materials to emerge.

One of the primary challenges in Copenhagen's urban apartments is optimizing natural light, especially during shorter winter days. For this Krøyers Plads residence, we focused on maximizing light penetration and diffusion. Large windows were left unobstructed, and reflective surfaces were strategically placed to amplify the ambient light. The layout was reconfigured to create open-plan living areas that flow seamlessly, enhancing the sense of space and allowing light to travel deep into the apartment. This not only brightened the interior but also created a dynamic interplay of light and shadow throughout the day, highlighting the architectural volumes.

What defines architectural minimalism in interior design? Architectural minimalism, as executed in this Copenhagen apartment, prioritizes the essence of space over ornamentation. It involves a meticulous approach to defining volumes, where walls, ceilings, and floors are seen as sculptural elements. Our material selection for this project was deliberately restrained, featuring natural oak flooring laid in a wide plank pattern, white plaster walls, and bespoke cabinetry in a light grey matte lacquer. These elements form a cohesive foundation, providing a sense of tranquility and order. Furnishings were selected for their ergonomic comfort, timeless design, and understated elegance, with pieces by Danish and Italian designers that complement the minimalist aesthetic. A custom-designed built-in storage solution along one wall serves to declutter the space, maintaining the clean lines and visual calm essential to the architectural minimalist brief. This integrated approach ensures every element serves a purpose, contributing to the overall sense of refined simplicity.

Thirdly, the strategic use of lighting, both natural and artificial, to create soft, even illumination without harsh shadows, contributes significantly to a peaceful ambiance. The kitchen and dining areas were designed as a single, integrated zone, featuring a minimalist island with a seamless white quartz countertop that extends into a dining surface. This integration enhances functionality and social interaction while maintaining the sleek aesthetic. Appliances are fully integrated behind custom panels, contributing to the uncluttered look. The bedroom continues the theme of serenity with a custom-designed platform bed and integrated storage, emphasizing clean lines and a peaceful retreat. The bathroom features large format porcelain tiles in a subtle concrete finish, floating vanity, and frameless glass shower enclosure, reinforcing the commitment to architectural purity and functional elegance. Every detail, from door handles to lighting fixtures, was carefully considered to align with the overarching design philosophy of clarity and restraint, ensuring a cohesive and harmonious living experience within this Modern Minimalist apartment in Copenhagen.
